When I first started doing this, the internet was much younger and internet traffic was much smaller. Ebay (the largest internet auction company http://pages.ebay.com/aw/index.html had just gotten started. I started listing a few of the items that we carry on Ebay; and sold almost every single one: often for more than the catalog listed retail price on the website. Since then, internet traffic has increased dramatically; meaning more shoppers at online auctions than ever before.
There are now thousands of online auctions covering the internet. The products from Africa Imports are marvelous for this because many are one of a kind (this means that those bidding will not have another chance if they do not outbid others bidding on an item). Other items that are available in larger quantities are also great. Not only can you can sell items to multiple buyers in one auction; but almost all of these items are still unusual; and difficult to find at traditional retail outlets.
You can even sell some items without buying them until they are sold and the money is already in your hands. You run your auction; sell to the highest bidder (assuming that it is higher than whatever base price you will accept); collect the money; and then email or phone in your order. You pay us over the phone by credit card; we ship the items to your buyer; and you keep the profit. You don't ever need to handle or invest money in the inventory. You never have to leave home; or even get out of your slippers.
One of the difficulties with online auctions is having all of the photos and text that need to be placed in your ad. You can use the photos and descriptions that we have already published for you on the internet; and place ads with hardly any time committment at all. The first time through will take you longer as you learn the whole process; but after that your time committment on each sale will be ten minutes or less. I can do it in less than five minutes. You don't have to take photos; publish them to a URL; or write ad copy. It is already available through our web site.
On one of a kind items, there is usually no photo published; and you will have to purchase the item; or leave a non-refundable deposit to sell it. Otherwise it will be sold by us to whoever comes to buy it first. Your auction could end; and you would be committed to sell to someone; after the item is already sold to someone else by us.
Free Classified Ads:
The same applies to free classified ads. You can place ads on free classified ad boards; use the photos that are already published for you; and modify the text to fit the ad size where it goes. You can even buy programs for $50. to $100. that will automate the entire submission process for you. You can then post to hundreds of classified ad locations at the same time.
In this situation it is basically the same as the last one. You sell the item; email or phone your order to us; and it is sent to the customer for you.
